The Y2K era - I was a pre-teen in flared jeans and a baby tee, sitting in my bedroom which was plastered with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera posters. My CD player was permanently on, butterfly clips in my hair, and my lips were covered in frosted lip gloss. Meanwhile, my parents were panicking about a Y2K crash that never actually happened. It was an unforgettable time to grow up. The music was addictive and fun, and the fashion was even better. Metallic fabrics, low-rise denim jeans, platform sandals, tinted sunglasses, everything was bold, shiny, and a little futuristic. As an ode to this time of my life, I have put together a Vault Edit inspired by true Y2K fashion, filled with the clothes, outfits, accessories, and shoes that defined the early 2000s. This was a time when the Juicy Couture velour tracksuit was everywhere, baby tees were covered with slogans - I still remember my go to Paris Hilton shirt that said “That’s Hot”, low-rise denim including short skirts were everywhere, layered cropped cardigans, plaid skirts, and tube tops were worn on repeat. And let’s not forget the tinted sunglasses, mini shoulder bags, chunky platform shoes and kitten heels and the quintessential butterfly hair clips that were everywhere. And the fun thing about this Vault Edit is that many Y2K inspired fashion items are coming back in style this year including halter and tube tops, cargo pants, graphic tees and platform boots.
